Title: Analysis of Equilibria with One-Half Degree Defects for the Landau-de Gennes Model of Nematic Liquid Crystals Abstract: We investigate the structure of nematic liquid crystal thin films described by the Landau–de Gennes tensor-valued order parameter model with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the sides of nonzero degree. We prove that as the elasticity constant goes to zero in the energy. a limiting liquid crystal uniaxial texture forms with a finite number of defects, all of degree one-half or all of degree minus one-half, corresponding to vertical disclination lines at those locations. We also describe a result on the limiting behavior of minimizers of the Chern-Simons-Higgs model without magnetic field that follows from a similar proof.

Character and History of the Upper Ohio River Valley
Dismemberment of the preglacial Teays Valley system and development of the present Ohio River valley began in late Tertiary or early Pleistocene. By Illinoian time the present Ohio River was largely established in its present course, except for its headwaters above mile 114, which still flowed northward. The Illinoian glacial advance into northwestern Pennsylvania caused diversion of this porti...
متن کاملPotential Benefits of Wetland Filters for Tile Drainage Systems: Impact on Nitrate Loads to Mississippi River Subbasins
The primary objective of this project was to estimate the nitrate reduction that could be achieved using restored wetlands as nitrogen sinks in tile-drained regions of the upper Mississippi River (UMR) and Ohio River basins. This report provides an assessment of nitrate concentrations and loads across the UMR and Ohio River basins and the mass reduction of nitrate loading that could be achieved...
متن کاملLandscape genetic patterns of the rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum: a catchment analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellites.
Catchment population structure and divergence patterns of the rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum (Percidae: Teleostei), an eastern North American benthic fish, are tested using a landscape genetics approach. Allelic variation at eight nuclear DNA microsatellite loci and two mitochondrial DNA regions [cytochrome (cyt) b gene and control region; 2056 aligned base pairs (bp)] is analysed from 89 ...
متن کاملHomogeneity at nuclear microsatellite loci masks mitochondrial haplotype diversity in the endangered fanshell pearlymussel (Cyprogenia stegaria).
We report on multiple patterns of differentiation and connectivity in the fanshell pearlymussel (Cyprogenia stegaria), based on different markers. Knowledge of genetic variation and genetic connectivity among remaining populations of this federally endangered species is needed to initiate implementation of the species recovery plan. We collected tissue samples from 96 specimens from the Green, ...
متن کاملPersistent organic pollutants in fish tissue in the mid-continental great rivers of the United States.
Great rivers of the central United States (Upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers) are valuable economic and cultural resources, yet until recently their ecological condition has not been well quantified. In 2004-2005, as part of the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program for Great River Ecosystems (EMAP-GRE), we measured legacy organochlorines (OCs) (pesticides and polychlorinat...
